This morning on Lucy & Kel for Breakfast, hearts were full (and eyes maybe a little misty) as Lucy opened up about visiting her parents in Queensland.
“I’m very, very blessed to have Mum and Dad,” she said. “They’re the world to me.” While she was there, Lucy pulled the ultimate stealth move, sneaking off to pay the dinner bill before her dad could. “My dad’s the kind of dad who always pays for everyone,” she laughed. “But I don’t want him to always do that, so I snuck away and paid.”
Then came the moment that made Kel’s jaw drop. Over dinner, Lucy’s parents mentioned maybe upgrading their old car. Without thinking, she offered, “I’d like to give you some money towards a car.”
Her dad immediately shut it down with a “No way, no how, not at all.” But Lucy said, laughing, “Mum was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, Bill, wait, how much are we talking?” Cue Kel: “Janice has already picked out the colours.”
Lucy got a bit emotional reflecting on it. “I wish I was wealthy, not for me, but so I could look after my parents. You need a car? I’ve got it. You want a little apartment? I’ve got it. They’ve given me so much; I just want to bless them back.”
Kel could relate, sharing that his dad still insists on slipping him fifty dollars for dinner. “I’ve given up saying no,” he said. “I just hand it to Mum and go buy pizza for everyone.”
Because really, that’s what it’s all about — not the money, but the love, gratitude, and little ways we try to give back to the people who gave us everything.
