She’s an AFLW premiership player, a former national netballer, a sports broadcaster, and now a children’s book author. Libby Birch is proving there’s no limit to what girls can do.

Joining Lucy & Kel to talk about her new book Libby’s Footy Adventures, Libby shared why it was so important to create the first picture book showing girls playing footy.
“I couldn’t believe we still didn’t have that kind of representation in kids’ books,” she said. “Storytelling matters, girls need to see themselves in sport from a young age.”

Though Libby didn’t start playing footy until she was 18, she’s now one of the game’s trailblazers, the first player to win premierships with three AFLW clubs and the first Victorian to play 50 and then 75 games.
But beyond the milestones, Libby is passionate about helping young girls believe they belong in sport. “You don’t have to be the fastest or the strongest,” she said. “You just have to show up and be yourself, and that is always enough.”

Her message landed close to home for Lucy & Kel, who earlier this we covered season fees for nearly 50 girls in sport. In a time when many families are doing it tough, they wanted to remove the barriers and remind girls that they do belong on the field.
With voices like Libby’s leading the way, the future of girls in sport looks bold, bright and unstoppable.
