Brussels Sprouts

Brussels SproutsPublished

Lucy’s been called out again, this time by the Brussels sprouts industry. After boldly declaring that sprouts “taste like feet” and comparing them to other less-than-appetizing things, she’s been invited to atone. The plan is to head out to one of the biggest Brussels sprout farms in the southern hemisphere and pick the very first sprout of the season.

To get a sense of how the Light family really feels about this controversial vegetable, Lucy and Kel opened the lines and asked a simple question: Brussels sprouts, yay or nay? The response was massive.

From the flood of texts and calls, here’s the vibe:

Most people actually love sprouts, especially when cooked properly. As one texter put it: “Don’t doubt the sprout. Doubt your ability to cook.”

Some blamed bad childhood memories of sprouts boiled to mush, but admitted they’ve come around after discovering better ways to prepare them.

Others are lone sprout-lovers in their homes, like Ali, who said her family won’t touch them which just means more for her.

Daniel gave perhaps the most balanced take: “They’re not the best, but not the worst.”

Maria shared that while her son refused to eat sprouts growing up, he’s now a chef and has to cook them regularly.

It turns out Lucy might be on the wrong side of veggie history. But she’s taking it all in stride and heading to the sprout farm, ready to make peace with the produce.
