Facts About Cataracts
Cataracts are one of the world’s leading causes of blindness, affecting around 100 million people.
A cataract occurs when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, preventing people from seeing clearly. Cataracts can develop in one or both eyes.
If left untreated, cataracts can cause permanent, lifelong vision loss and blindness. Most people affected live in low-income countries, where many remain blind simply because they cannot afford the surgery needed to restore their sight.
Why Children Need Our Help Now
- Delaying cataract surgery reduces the chance of restoring a child’s sight. Early treatment gives the best results.
- Children’s eyes are still developing until age 8-10 and untreated cataracts can have serious long-term effects on their vision.
- During early childhood, untreated cataracts can permanently affect how the eyes and brain develop.
- Children in poverty with cataracts are more likely to drop out of school, leading to lifelong social and economic impacts
Meet CBM: Serving the Poorest of the Poor
CBM is a Christian organisation dedicated to helping the poorest of the poor – people living in poverty who have disabilities.
CBM works alongside field partners to support eye projects in countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea.
