Last week, Madonna jumped up on stage at Coachella as a surprise guest for Sabrina Carpenter, and Lucy absolutely loved seeing two women from completely different generations sharing that iconic moment together.
But not everyone saw it that way. Online, there was backlash, with people saying Madonna was “too old” to be performing… which honestly shocked Lucy. And Kel made a really good point, when it’s older men on stage, no one seems to have an issue.
It opened up a big conversation, and the phones lit up with The Light family wanting to talk about aging and ageism, especially in everyday life and at work.
Maria texted in to say she’s a 60-year-old personal trainer, and people are always saying, “good on you for doing it”… meanwhile she’s thinking, “I’m probably fitter than you!”
And Vanessa, who works in recruitment, called through and said yes, ageism does exist, but from her perspective, if someone stays in a role for a few years, that’s a huge win. Lucy jumped in saying it’s such a shift from the past where people would stay in one job for decades, whereas now, especially with Gen Z, it can be closer to a couple of years. So maybe there’s real value in hiring older workers for that consistency and stability.
At the end of the day, whether you’re a Sabrina in your 20s or a Madonna in your 60s, there’s space for you… and something you bring that no one else can.
As Lucy said, “You’re never too young… or too old… to make a difference.”
