89.9 TheLight and Convoy of Hope are asking Australians to pray for relief efforts in the Philippines after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the southern tip of Mindanao on 8 June.
The earthquake hit during the day, while schools were in session. At least 35 people have died; 13 of the victims were killed in a resulting landslide. Buildings and other infrastructure collapsed as tsunami waves hit the coast. Power and communication were lost in several regions. Search and rescue teams are looking for survivors.
Joel A’Bell, National Director of Convoy of Hope Australia and New Zealand, says that Convoy’s teams are already on the ground, distributing vital supplies.
“Convoy of Hope has worked in the Philippines for many years. When the earthquake hit, our teams swung into action distributing shelf-stable food, hygiene kits, and other essential relief from multiple local warehouses.”
“Hundreds of thousands of meals are going to survivors. With homes, businesses, and belongings no longer stable, this aid is a lifeline.”
Convoy is committed to helping families and communities devastated by this disaster as they move toward long-term recovery
