Grammy-winning worship artist Chris Tomlin joined The Daily with Cam Want to talk about his involvement in The First Hymn, a powerful new film exploring the history and heart of worship, hitting Australian cinemas for one week only from July 31.

The film is centred on the discovery in Egypt of papyrus fragments containing the earliest known Christian hymn, complete with both its lyrics and musical notation.
“This little parchment… it represents so much,” Chris shared. “There’s no song, no church, no hope without what Jesus did for us.” The documentary dives deep into the story behind one of the earliest hymns of the church, pointing viewers back to the unshakable truth of the Gospel.

Even after nearly three decades of leading worship, Chris says the passion hasn’t faded. “There’s still a thrill every time I head into the studio, but also a weight. You’re not just creating music, you’re helping people connect with God. That never stops being a privilege.”

Chris believes The First Hymn isn’t just a film, it’s a faith-building experience. “Even after all these years, I walked away having learned something new,” he said. “You can’t help but have your faith strengthened. It reminds you that you’re part of a Kingdom that outlasts every challenge. That Jesus’ Church keeps moving forward.”

🎬 The First Hymn screens across Australia for one week only from July 31. Don’t miss this chance to be inspired and reminded of the bigger story you’re part of.
