Divorce rates these days, depending on where you live, are up around the 40% mark. The more affluent a society becomes, the higher that rate climbs. It’s tragic, really.
The idea of marriage as a life-long, “until death do us part” thing was always part of God’s plan.
Genesis 2:24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife. In this way two people become one.
Whether you’re married, you’ve never been married or you’ve either been through divorce or the loss of a loved one, I’m not here to make any judgements. I went through divorce over 30 years ago when my first wife left me for one of my best friends. Stuff happens.
But even though we – humanity – haven’t executed this whole marriage thing as well as we might have, marriage has always, always been part of God’s plan. Although, he does call some to be single, and that’s perfectly fine too. In fact, the Bible refers to singleness as the higher calling.
My point is just to remind us – to remind you, wherever you may be at in the marriage stakes – that marriage, the joining of one man and one woman exclusively to one another, is a good plan, a very good plan. When you’re married, you can’t go chasing after other women or men (as the case may be), right?
So whatever you can do, whether in your own marriage, in helping other couples close to you in theirs, in honouring God’s plan for marriage … whatever you can do, do it!
Because that’s why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife. In this way two people become one.
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
